Description
US Route 33 is a diagonal route, currently extending from Richmond, Virginia to Elkhart, Indiana. However, for much of the 20th Century, it extended a little further, into far southwest Michigan. US 33 first made its way into Michigan in 1938, when it was tacked on as an additional designation to US 31. It ran through Niles, St. Joseph, and Benton Harbor, ending at Lake Michigan Beach. Until 1963, all of US 33 in Michigan was also part of US 31, making its existence a bit silly. A freeway (now part of Interstate 196) was eventually built for part of US 31, allowing US 33 to have its own roadway for a little while. However, in 1986, US 33 was cut all the way back to US 12 in Niles, leaving it with only about three miles (4½ km) in Michigan. Even those three miles were eliminated in 1997, when its northern end was moved to Elkhart.
Own a striking piece of highway history with our Michigan US Route 33 sign. This design follows the exact 1926 federal standards for US highway markers. It captures the bold shield shape and uses the Michigan State Highway Department font unique to the Great Lakes State. Highway sign collectors know how rare original 1948-style signs are today. When they appear, they often cost hundreds or thousands of dollars. Skip the auctions and high prices. Choose our expertly crafted replica and elevate your space for a fraction of the cost.
