Summit of Mount Locke, Highest Point on Texas Highways sign

Mount Locke is a peak in the Davis Mountains of Jeff Davis County, Texas. It is the location of one of the telescopes of the McDonald Observatory, operated by the University of Texas. There is a state highway leading to its summit, currently designated Spur 78, which connects it to nearby State Highway 118. This point is the highest point on the Texas state highway system, 6791 feet (2066 m) above sea level. In the 1940s, there was a wooden sign marking this point, reading “Summit of Mount Locke, Highest Point on Texas Highways. This elevation 6791, elev. valley below 5280.” Unfortunately, there appears to be no sign marking the summit any longer.

Using historic photos of the original, we’ve replicated every detail of the original sign, with some subtle enhancements to the mountains to make it a more attractive display piece. We’ve even adjusted the fonts to match the hand-painted lettering of the original sign!
