Description

The Chinook Scenic Byway is among the most scenic routes in Washington state. It begins in Enumclaw, following Washington State Route 410 in a general southeasterly direction. It traverses the base of Mount Rainier, the highest peak in Washington and the most prominent peak in the contiguous 48 states. From there, it winds its way through Chinook Pass, then descends to its terminus at US-12 west of Naches, where it ends. The Federal Highway Administration has recognized the natural beauty of the Chinook Scenic Byway by designating it an All-American Road. Across the whole country, only 31 roads carry this special designation.

The Chinook Scenic Byway is identified by these circular signs placed at the entrances to the route. It depicts an eagle flying over a river, which recedes into the trees in the middle distance. Mount Rainier looms over the scene in the background, with a brilliant sunburst over its peak.
