Description

Long before Interstate 95 was built, US Route 1 was the original Main Street of the East Coast. As such, it passed right through the heart of Washington, DC. The route enters the District of Columbia from Virginia on the 14th Street Bridges across the Potomac River, passing by the Jefferson Memorial. US 1 joins US 50 on Constitution Avenue NW, following the northern edge of the National Mall and providing access to the National Museum of American History, the National Museum of Natural History, and the National Gallery of Art. The two routes then use 6th St. NW (going northbound) and 9th St. NW (going southbound) to connect to Rhode Island Avenue. US 1 then splits off onto Rhode Island Avenue, following it northeast out of the city and into Maryland.

Our District of Columbia US Route 1 signs are a tribute to those used across the nation’s capital over the last 100 years. We offer four different variants of the sign: the original 1926 federal standard with the historic block fonts, as well as three versions of the 1960 district standard with the modern fonts and “DC-US” both tucked into the crown of the shield. The 1960 version is available in the familiar white, as well as the red and blue versions DC experimented with during the era. Red shields were posted along the southbound route, while blue shields were posted going northbound. They make an excellent way to show your love for the beautiful city of Washington and the country it was built to serve.
