New Brunswick and East Brunswick are two cities along the Raritan River in central New Jersey. New Brunswick is the county seat of Middlesex County, with East Brunswick directly adjoining it. Although both cities are commuter towns for New York City, the area has a number of unique attractions. New Brunswick is best known as the home of Rutgers University, the largest university in New Jersey. It is also home to a number of medical facilities, including hospitals, pharmaceutical company headquarters and manufacturing plants. New Brunswick and East Brunswick are served by the New Jersey Turnpike’s Exit 9. That exit allows travelers to access US Route 1 and New Jersey Route 18 to continue on into the cities.

When the New Jersey Turnpike opened, its operators had to create a signage system from scratch for one of the first high-speed roadways in the country. Their solution featured oversized exit numbers and a distinctive wavy arrow found only on the Turnpike. Even after national Interstate System standards began shaping freeway signage across the country, the New Jersey Turnpike continued using its own unique signs throughout the 20th century. Federal guidelines eventually caught up in the 2010s, and the original-style signs were replaced with standardized designs.

Our New Jersey Turnpike Exit 9 sign recreates the sign that once stood over the approach to the exit for New Brunswick and East Brunswick, until sometime between 2013 and 2018. We based the design on photographs of the original sign and recreated the distinctive arrow using NJTA blueprints. The result is a remarkably detailed replica that captures the character of the original while scaling it down to a practical size for your home, office, garage, or collection.
