Description
The National Road was the first road funded by the United States government, built between 1811 and 1837. It stretched from Cumberland, Maryland to what was then the capital of Illinois, Vandalia. At the time, it passed through six states: Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. (West Virginia didn’t exist yet!) As the horse-drawn conveyances of the time gave way to the auto trails, the National Road became part of the National Old Trails Road. Later, with the advent of the United States Numbered Highway System, US Route 40 subsumed much of the National Road. In recognition of the highway’s history, the Federal Highway Administration added it to the list of All-American Roads in 2002. Only 31 roads share this distinction nationwide.
We’ve made this Historic National Road sign to be an amalgamation of elements from signage used for the highway in the six states it originally passed through. Relive your journeys down this historic road by adding this sign to your collection today. It’s a great addition to any den, bar, man cave, garage, or any room needing a pinch of patriotic Americana hearkening back to the country’s past.
Our Historic National Road marker is printed on heavy, 14-gauge steel. It is perfect for everyday display, indoors or outdoors, thanks to its durable non-reflective finish. You can get this sign in a range of sizes from 9.6 in. × 12 in. all the way up to 24 in. × 30 in. Two mounting holes are always included for your convenience. (Looking for a size not listed here? Or perhaps one from a scenic byway or trail closer to home? It would be our pleasure to help you out! To get started on your custom order, just contact Jake.)
