Description
The Garden State Parkway is a toll road traversing New Jersey from south to north. It starts at Cape May, at the far southern end of the state. From there, it proceeds north, all the way to the New York state line. In Ocean County, about midway up the Jersey Shore, is exit 63. Travelers exiting here are brought to Route 72. They may then use that highway to access Pemberton and Long Beach Island.
Pemberton is located just across the county line, in neighboring Burlington County. It is technically not a town, but a borough, a unique form of government found mostly in New Jersey. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 1,371. A driver cannot actually arrive in Pemberton from Route 72 alone; the highway ends before then. They must proceed to the borough by means of County Road 644.
Long Beach Island is a barrier island off the coast of New Jersey. It is about 18 miles (29 km) long and varies between ½ and ⅕ mile (800–300 m) wide. The only way onto or off of the island is via the Route 72 bridge. The island hosts several small residential communities, including Beach Haven, Ship Bottom, Surf City, and Long Beach Township. The island has been settled since 1690, and was initially a hotspot for the whaling industry. By the second half of the 19th century, the primary industry had turned to tourism. A fatal shark attack in Beach Haven in 1916 was one of many that inspired author Peter Benchley to write the book Jaws. In the present day, Long Beach Island has developed the image of a more family-friendly alternative to the other oceanfront getaways along the Atlantic coast.
