King’s Highway 2 was, for many years, the major east-west connector across southern Ontario. The route originally ran all the way from Windsor to the Ontario–Québec border at Rivière-Beaudette, a distance of 876 km (545 mi). It was the first highway maintained by the province; its original name was simply “the Provincial Highway” because there were no others! As time went by Highway 2 attracted more and more traffic, making it a natural subject for expansion. Over time, it was entirely replaced by the King’s Highway 401 freeway. Most of the old Highway 2 was eventually dropped from the rolls, though it is still drivable and maintained by local governments. However, about one kilometer of the highway, connecting Highway 401 to the town of Gananoque in the Thousand Islands area, still carries the King’s Highway 2 designation.
