Description
US Route 395 is the easternmost principal highway in California. Originally, it began in San Diego, and headed north from there. San Diego’s first freeway, the Cabrillo Freeway through Balboa Park, dates to 1948. It originally carried the dual designations of US 80 and US 395, but today is known simply as State Route 163. From San Diego, US 395 continued north through the Inland Empire area, overlapping with US Route 66 through Cajon Pass to Hesperia. All of US 395 south of Hesperia was removed from the rolls after being displaced by Interstate 15.
Hesperia is where US 395 now begins; from there, US 395 heads north through the high desert, serving the areas just to the east of the Sierra, including Bishop and Mono Lake. Through this area, the route survives largely unchanged, with just a few four-laning projects taking it through such historic eastern Sierra towns as Lee Vining and Independence. It briefly enters Nevada, passing through Gardnerville, Minden, Carson City and Reno. US 395 then loops back into California to head through Susanville and Modoc County, before continuing even further north through Oregon and Washington.
This US Route 395 sign is made according to the standards used by the Automobile Club of Southern California (ACSC) from 1935 to 1939. During these years, ACSC was responsible for signage along the section of highway south of Nevada. Every detail of our sign is just like the original, including exact shield shape, the fonts used, and the ACSC logo at the bottom of the sign. It makes a great addition to any collection of historic California transportation memorabilia, without breaking the bank on an original.
Our ACSC US Route 395 sign is made to the highest standards of quality and printed on heavy 14-gauge American steel. It has a high-gloss, non-reflective finish, a close match to the porcelain enamel of the original signs. It is also just as weather-resistant as the original signs. Mounting holes are included for easy installation and display. It is available in the following sizes:
- 12.188 in. × 11.813 in.
- 16.25 in. × 15.75 in. (the actual size of the markers ACSC posted along US-395)
- 36.562 in. × 35.438 in.
