California (CSAA) Golden Gate International Exposition directional sign

The Golden Gate International Exposition was a World’s Fair held in San Francisco in 1939 and 1940. The fair was conceived as a celebration of the recent construction of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge. And what better place to host a fair intended to commemorate such massive infrastructure projects than on yet another massive infrastructure project: an artificial island in the middle of San Francisco Bay? The fair led to the construction of Treasure Island atop a shoal off the shore of Yerba Buena Island. The island was built up with a 40-acre midway, an 80-foot statue called Pacifica, and even an arena which hosted part of the first-ever NCAA men’s basketball tournament, including one of its Final Four games. After the fair closed in 1940, the U.S. Navy took over Treasure Island and demolished all of the fair structures, including the Pacifica statue; it used the island as a naval base until 1997.

Our Golden Gate International Exposition directional sign is a precise replica of those posted by the California State Automobile Association (CSAA) to guide travelers to the fair. It features the blue and gold logo of the exposition next to a large directional arrow. The non-reflective, high-gloss finish of our sign is a very close match to the porcelain enamel of the original sign. It’s a great way to look back on this unique piece of San Francisco history!
