Description
Among the most challenging conditions a truck driver faces are steep downward slopes, particularly when combined with curves. These two hazards are often found descending from mountains, as Interstate 70 does as it approaches Denver from the west. A truck’s tremendous weight means that the driver must be vigilant in ensuring their speed does not creep high enough that they cannot negotiate the curves. At the same time, the driver must take care not to apply the brakes too liberally, as overheated brakes are ineffective.
One particular challenge on the Interstate 70 downgrade into Denver is that several times, the road levels out briefly, lulling truckers into complacency, despite the fact that there are still long stretches of downhill road ahead. After an incident in 1989 when an eastbound truck lost its brakes (and destruction ensued), the state of Colorado came up with two innovative warning signs and posted them on the freeway. After the installation of the two signs, the number of runaway trucks has diminished to about half of the previous level. This is the first one of the two, reading “TRUCKERS, DON’T BE FOOLED, 4 MORE MILES OF STEEP GRADE AND SHARP CURVES.” (Later replacements changed the “Truckers” heading to just “Trucks”.) The second sign, further east, is the famous “Truckers You Are Not Down Yet” sign.
Our Truckers Don’t Be Fooled sign is a precise replica of the infamous sign located four miles from the bottom of the Interstate 70 grade. We’ve captured every detail of the original design, from the fonts to the layout, to ensure this sign will evoke the memories of bygone road trips coming down from the mountains. This is not a lightweight novelty piece! It’s built to impress, printed on heavy 14-gauge steel with a high gloss finish that looks great as part of any room’s decor.
Our Colorado Truckers Don’t Be Fooled sign is printed in the United States on American steel. It’s rugged enough to stand up to the elements when installed outdoors, even through a snowy Rocky Mountain winter. Mounting holes are included to make installation easy. We’ve scaled it down from the colossal freeway-size original to a range of sizes more reasonable for home use:
- 15 in. × 9 in.
- 22½ in. × 13½ in.
- 35 in. × 21 in.
- 45 in. × 27 in.
- 70 in. × 42 in. (this one is so big we’ll split it across four panels for easier shipping and installation)
- 90 in. × 54 in. (this one is even bigger, so we’ll split it into SIX panels!)
