Way out in far west Texas, on the east bank of the Pecos River, is Loving County, Texas. The county is named after Oliver Loving, a cattle rancher who helped establish a trail north to New Mexico and Colorado for cattle drives. Loving County was first established in 1887, but done away with in 1897 after all of the county officials moved out of the county. It was re-established in 1931, when oil was discovered there. It contains one active town, Mentone, which serves as the county seat, and three ghost towns. However, Loving County carries a unique distinction among America’s thousands of counties—it has the smallest population of all of them. As of the 2020 census, only 64 people live in Loving County, with a little over a third of them living in Mentone.

Our Entering Loving County sign is made according to the 1978 Texas Department of Transportation standards for county line signs. This year marked the first time Texas posted green directional and information signs; before then, they were black and white. Every detail is just like the original signs of the era, including the exact layout and the federal standard FHWA Series fonts.
