Description
In 1959, the state of Florida posted a unique sign on the Overseas Highway leaving Key West. “You are leaving Key West, Fla.,” it read. “The beginning of US-1, and ending in Fort Kent, Me. Thank you – Come again, State Road Department.” In the center of the sign was a large US-1 marker; it was red to match the color coding Florida used for of all of the US routes during this time period. This sign was in place throughout the 1960s and into the 1970s, when it quietly disappeared.
We’ve reproduced the You Are Leaving Key West sign for your modern day enjoyment. Every detail of our replica is just like the original, from the fonts used, to the layout, to the precise curves making up the classic red US-1 shield. The original of this sign is long, long gone. It has never turned up on the collector’s market; it was probably sold for scrap decades ago. Our replica is your chance to own an excellent display piece, without having to invent time travel and other minor inconveniences.
Our You Are Leaving Key West sign is flat printed on heavy 14-gauge steel. It is non-reflective, making it a great addition to your home decor. It can also stand up to the Florida sun and rain when installed outdoors, too. The original sign was rather colossal—perhaps 8 feet by 8 feet or so. Our replicas are a precise rescaling down to much more manageable sizes. Choose from sizes ranging from 12 inches square, all the way up to 36 inches square. All sizes include two convenient mounting holes. (Would you like a recreation of another classic guide sign, from Florida or elsewhere? Custom orders are our specialty!
