Los Angeles, California State Law Says No! anti-wildfire sign

Southern California is uniquely vulnerable to wildfires thanks to its weather pattern of alternating rainy and dry seasons. During the wet season, vegetation quickly grows. During the dry season, that same vegetation can easily become fuel for a wildfire. All that is needed is a spark—which can come in the form of a cigarette or match discarded by a careless driver. To warn against this danger, the U.S. Forest Service created a sign reading “The Law Says NO!”, along with a graphic of a driver throwing a (comically large) cigarette and match out the window. This sign appeared in the October 1976 Forest Service poster and sign catalog as Poster P51-31. At some point, the text was modified to specify that State Law Says NO! The city of Los Angeles further adapted it for use in wildfire-sensitive areas such as Laurel Canyon. Amusingly, they added a citation to the municipal code rather than state law…although the message remains an important one, regardless of which jurisdiction is responsible for codifying it.

Our State Law Says No! anti-wildfire sign is based upon the version used on the roads of Los Angeles. We’ve further adapted it to use the official FHWA Series highway sign fonts, giving it an extra air of authority. The drawing of the careless driver is a faithful replica of the original.
