Maryland US Route 50 highway marker sign (1953)

Price range: $89.00 through $359.00

Description

Maryland is the eastmost state served by US Route 50. The highway begins at Ocean City, a beachfront resort town on a barrier island on the Atlantic coast. From there, it crosses onto the mainland Delmarva Peninsula, headed west to Salisbury. US 50 heads northwest to the shore of Chesapeake Bay, then proceeds north along the coast as part of the Chesapeake Country National Scenic Byway. It then turns west to cross the bay using the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel. It serves the northern outskirts of Annapolis, Maryland’s capital, then passes through the southern edge of Bowie and the northeastern D.C. suburbs. US 50 then crosses into Washington DC. After passing through Northern Virginia and West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle, US 50 re-enters extreme western Maryland, with a short snippet of the route crossing the tip of Garrett County. This section is notable for reaching the highest point on the Maryland highway system, at Backbone Mountain, 3,095 feet (943 m) above sea level.

Bring home a piece of highway history with this Maryland US Route 50 sign, meticulously reproduced to the exact 1953 standard used on Maryland roads from the 1950s through the early 1960s.
