Missouri Route 66 state highway marker

Description

Much of the construction of the Interstate System along the route of US Route 66 was done by directly upgrading the existing highway. A majority of Missouri’s section of Interstate 44 was built in this manner. However, Oklahoma had already built the Will Rogers Turnpike a few years before the Interstates, and I-44 was routed along it. That meant that around the Joplin area, I-44 needed to dip south to connect to the existing road. The result of this was that I-44 bypassed the short section of US-66 in Kansas in its entirety, as well as a 14-mile (21-km) section of road through downtown Joplin. When US-66 was stricken from the national rolls in the 1980s, a new highway designation was needed for the bypassed section of road. In Kansas, it became K-66, and in Missouri, it became Missouri Route 66.
