Description
A control point is a specific location on a railroad line controlled by a dispatcher or signal system. Control points are typically found at important operational locations like crossovers or junctions. Each control point is given a name of some kind, in order to make it easy to refer to. The type of name used varies by railroad—some lines just identify control points by milepost, while others use alphanumeric shortcodes, and others use names of nearby geographic features or even entirely-made-up names chosen for their distinctiveness. Conrail, the dominant Class I railroad in the Northeast during the last quarter of the 20th century, used both two-letter shortcodes and settlement names to identify its control points. Whatever naming scheme is used, a sign must be placed at the corresponding real-world location to associate it with a control point.
