Description
M-76 was a highway in the northern part of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, running from Standish to Grayling, a distance of just over 61 miles (98 km). The earliest version of the route had its north end at Roscommon, and was much more indirect, hitting the towns of Sterling, Alger, and West Branch. Eventually, the road was extended to Grayling along a more direct route. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, M-76 was gradually upgraded to a full freeway. The last stretch of freeway was completed in 1973, at which time the M-76 designation was dropped from the state rolls, and the new freeway instead became part of Interstate 75.
