New Mexico State Road 1 highway marker

New Mexico State Road 1 was, as might be expected, one of the first roads to be signed by the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT). This particular sign, with the long-ray zia surrounding a small route number, was part of the inaugural set of signs made in April of 1927. However, the design didn’t stay around for very long, as the traveling speeds got higher along with the number of roads, which prompted a re-design in the 1930s to make the signs more legible. The zia does still feature in New Mexico’s state road signs, though, even if the design itself has undergone a few changes over the years.

Our New Mexico State Road 1 sign is made to the exact state standards in use from the very beginning of the state’s highway system in 1927 to the 1930s, when the design was revised for better legibility. Due to its short life on the roads of New Mexico, finding an original marker like this one will be a long, stressful process, capped off with a hefty price tag if you manage to find one at all.
