Description
The Santa Fe Trail was a historic road that was in use before the automobile, from 1821 to 1880. It connected Franklin, Missouri (in the central part of the state, near Columbia) with Santa Fe, New Mexico, which in the early days of the trail was part of the country of Mexico. The trail traversed the whole width of what is now the state of Kansas. It was so heavily used, wagons made ruts that are so deep they are still visible today. By the 1880s, the trail was rendered obsolete, first by railroads, and then later by modern highways. Much of the path the trail took is today served by US Route 56.
Our Kansas Santa Fe Trail sign is a faithful replica of those posted between 1956 and 1978 to mark the trail’s route along US 56. To make this sign, Jake managed to get his hands on an original vintage Santa Fe Trail sign. Then he tossed it on the scanner and, after a little bit of cleanup, the result is what you see here. It doesn’t get much more accurate than that! Our replica allows you get your hands on an excellent display piece without having to go to the trouble and expense of tracking down an original—Jake already did that for you, so you don’t have to!
Our Kansas Santa Fe Trail sign is flat printed on heavy-duty 14 gauge steel, right here in the United States. It can be installed indoors or outdoors thanks to its glossy but nonreflective protective finish. We’ve also included mounting holes to make it easy to install anywhere. Choose from the following sizes:
- 12 inches × 12 inches
- 15 inches × 15 inches (a size that was historically used extensively by Kansas but few other states; our 15×15 sign uses the same extra-rounded corners that Kansas used for safety reasons)
- 24 inches × 24 inches (the size used for most modern-day highway markers)
- 36 inches × 36 inches
We can make a wide variety of signs to serve as companion pieces to this one. We make Interstate, US, and state route markers, welcome signs, directional signs, and more! Have something in mind and don’t see it on our website? Just contact Jake to get started on your custom order!
