Description
As a region’s transportation needs change over time, highway route designations come and go. While the best-known US Highway to be consigned to history is the celebrated Route 66, Michigan has its own lost highway, in the form of US Route 16, also known as Grand River Avenue. This highway started in Detroit and proceeded northwestward, passing through Lansing and Grand Rapids before ending at the ferry docks in Muskegon. Motorists could then catch the SS Milwaukee Clipper across Lake Michigan to Wisconsin, where US 16 continued. When the Interstate System was developed in the 1950s, US 16 was such an important route that its entire length was upgraded, becoming Interstate 96. The Michigan portion of US 16 was then retired from the rolls in 1962, although it still exists much further west, in South Dakota and Wyoming.
Bring a piece of Michigan highway history home with our replica Michigan US Route 16 signs. They make a perfect conversation piece for enthusiasts of both highway history and American automobilia. We’ve meticulously recreated two versions of this bygone highway sign: the original design introduced in 1926 with the classic federal block fonts, as well as the 1948 version, using the custom fonts unique to Michigan that were typical of that era.
In the rare event that a good-condition Michigan US Route 16 sign appears on the collector’s market, it can sell for thousands of dollars. Take advantage of this opportunity to own a brand-new, museum-quality display piece without breaking the bank. Don’t compromise on quality with cheap imitations with the wrong fonts, shapes, and layouts. Our sign is crafted from heavy 14-gauge American steel, ensuring your sign will be accurate to the original in terms of both design and durability.
Our Michigan US Route 16 signs are proudly made in the USA. They are suitable for both indoor and outdoor display, and built to last for decades. To make installation easy, pre-drilled mounting holes are included. Pick from the following sizes:
- 12⅜ in. × 12 in. (scaled down to meet the needs of decorators with a limited space to work with)
- 16½ in. × 16 in. (the actual size used in the 1926 design)
- 24¾ in. × 24 in. (the size introduced in 1948, still used along the road today)
- 37⅛ in. × 36 in. (a size used in the present day for high-visibility applications, including along freeways)
