Description
The most famous highway in the United States is the historic US Route 66, which once ran from Chicago to Los Angeles. Along the way, it passed through Oklahoma, spending 432 miles (695 km) in the state, more than any other state except New Mexico. Route 66 entered Oklahoma from Kansas, traveling diagonally from the state’s northeast corner through Tulsa to Oklahoma City. There, the route turned more or less due west toward California, passing through western Oklahoma towns like El Reno, Weatherford, Elk City, and Sayre before reaching the Texas panhandle. Route 66 is a celebrated part of Oklahoma’s history, not just because of the amount of its mileage that is within the state, but also because one of the most prominent figures in the highway’s creation, Cyrus Avery, was from Tulsa. A number of famous Route 66 attractions line the highway throughout the state, such as the Blue Whale in Catoosa, the Round Barn in Arcadia, and the National Route 66 Museum in Elk City.
Our US Route 66 marker signs are made to the exact standards of those posted through Oklahoma along the route’s during its earliest days. Oklahoma has always been somewhat lax in following federal standards for highway signs, and these are no exception. The route shield is shaped slightly different, and uses unique fonts only ever seen in Oklahoma. (Both of these are likely because these early issues were made in Oklahoma prisons, such as the state penitentiary in McAlester.) We offer it in two styles: the original style used in 1926, with an extra-thick border and the state name abbreviated to “OKLA”, and the 1927 style with a more typical border and the state name fully spelled out. Both versions could be seen across the state until the 1948 federal style took hold.
As the most famous of all the US routes, original Route 66 signs inevitably go for thousands of dollars when they make their way to the collector’s market. With our faithful replica, you can save money while getting a great display piece for your office, bar, garage, man cave, game room, or any other room in the house.
Our Oklahoma Route 66 signs are flat printed here in the USA on heavy-duty 14 gauge steel. It has a glossy, non-reflective finish which protects it from Oklahoma’s wild weather when installed outdoors but also looking great indoors. Mounting holes are included to make installation easy. Choose from the following sizes:
