One such celebration was the “Bikecentennial”, a coast-to-coast bicycle tour scheduled to take place over the summer. The route chosen for the tour was called the TransAmerica Bike Trail, beginning at Yorktown, Virginia and ending at Astoria, Oregon, a distance of 4,250 miles (6,840 km) crossing ten states. Over 4,100 cyclists participated in the event, with nearly half of them completing the entire route. After the Bikecentennial event, the organizers transitioned to developing more bike routes across the United States, which later became the foundation of the U.S. Bicycle Route System.
