During the 1910s, automobiles were becoming more common, but dependable road signs were still rare. The Automobile Club of Southern California (ACSC) stepped in to help travelers navigate the state’s developing network of privately-built auto trails. Their distinctive diamond-shaped steel and porcelain enamel signs became iconic landmarks across the region. Each included the words “AUTO CLUB SO. CAL.” surrounding the club’s bell logo in the sign’s bottom point.
Our ACSC June Lake directional sign recreates one of the original signs which once stood on the eastern slope of the Sierra, near June Lake. It directs travelers toward Bishop in one direction and Gull Lake and Silver Lake in the other, and also the destinations of the Rush Creek Power Plant and the Mono Lake Post Office—two waypoints which would definitely be too obscure to appear on modern signage! As a nod to the sign’s location in Inyo National Forest, the US Forest Service shield appears in the top point of the sign.
